Chapter 19

Josh

Dani enters her office and slams the door, leaning against it. I lift my brows, tilting my head. “You did it.”

“I did nothing.”

“You took my advice.”

“It was good advice.”

Her chest rises and falls in rapid spurts, drawing my attention there.

“Hey, my face is up here.” Dani snaps her fingers, glaring at me.

“I know.” I shake my head.

“Then stop staring at the goods.” She pushes off the door and walks toward her desk.

“I wasn’t. I was watching you breathe.” As soon as the words come out of my mouth, I know it’s the wrong response.

Dani stalls and lifts her brows. “Watching me breathe? Not serial-killer vibes at all.” She shakes her head and takes a seat.

“Daniela!” The door swings open as the loud booming voice echoes.

Dani’s eyes widen, and she slides down on her seat.

“Papi, hi. I’m here working with Josh.” She smiles tentatively, cutting her eyes to me.

“Don’t Papi me. What did I tell you?“ Mr. Guerrero’s eyes are beaming lasers at her.

“I had to.” She sits tall, defiance replacing her nervous demeanor. “I can’t let it pass as if it’s nothing. I know that’s how our family deals with a lot of things. Keep our silence, sweep it under the rug, but I had to speak up.” She crosses her arms and lifts her chin.

“We don’t do that.”

“Maybe not you and Mami, but Abuela did. Don’t get me started on Tía Margarita. Confrontation sucks, but it’s better than turning a blind eye.”

I have no idea what family issues they’re talking about, but they’re getting off the work-related tracks.

“I told her it would be a good idea to talk to the listeners and tell them the truth. It’s the best way to maintain credibility and respect.” I look at Mr. Guerrero.

“I make final decisions about how things are run here, and hijacking someone else’s show to do it isn’t the right way.”

“While I agree…” I stare at Dani. “It’s good that everyone now understands what happened yesterday.”

“Don’t think I have forgotten that you kissed my daughter.” He points at me.

I swallow thickly and nod. “And again, I apologize. It was out of line and unprofessional.”

“You better be worth every penny I’m paying you.” I know a threat when I hear one, and I need this job to go well before adding a second failure to my list in under a month. I’d rather allow Mrs. Dalsh to walk through my house every day than have that happen.

“It will be.” I nod stoically.

Mr. Guerrero stares at his daughter again and shakes his head on a sigh. I bet he’s thinking how uncontrollable she is. I know the feeling. He walks away without another word.

“Phew,” Dani blows out, wiping her brow. “He’s going to kill me, but I couldn’t let people hanging.”

“It’s admirable you said the truth.”

A fake gasp comes from her. “I must’ve missed the moment we walked through a portal. You’ve been complimenting me too much. Well, abundantly for your personality.”

“I thought you were the one that dragged me into the portal by force? This is your witchcraft, isn’t it?”

She slaps the desk.
